Its contrast mechanism is based on the intravascular change in deoxyhemoglobin concentration and its transit through the cerebral vasculature. This has implications for its spatial and temporal resolution which are believed to be a few mm [1] and 4-7 s [2], respectively. In this study, we hypothesized that the BOLD temporal and spatial resolution are both limited by vascular transit effects. We use a previously described model of the venous architecture [3] to simulate the impulse response function of vascular transit, and compared the results with high resolution impulse response measurements in humans.

The 'where' and the 'when' of the BOLD response to pain in the insular cortex. Discussion on amplitudes and latencies
The operculo-insular cortex has been recently pointed out to be the main area of the pain matrix to be involved in the integration of pain intensity. This fMRI study specified the pattern of response to laser stimuli by focusing on this cortical area, by optimizing the temporal sampling and by investigating pain-related differences in the amplitudes and latencies of the BOLD responses. Canonica...

Using computer simulations and high-resolution fMRI experiments in humans (n=6) and rats (n=8), we investigated to what extent BOLD fMRI temporal resolution is limited by dispersion in the venous vasculature. For this purpose, time-to-peak (TTP) and full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the BOLD impulse response (IR) function were determined. In fMRI experiments, a binary m-sequence probe method...

متن کاملSpin Echo Hemodynamic Impulse Response at 7 T
Introduction Understanding the mechanism of neurovascular coupling underlying the BOLD fMRI signal is contingent on the accurate spatial and temporal characterization of the hemodynamic impulse response (HIR), linked specifically to the microvasculature (capillary bed). At high field strength (≥7T), the gradient-echo (GE) HIR can differ across cortical depth [1,2], suggesting that voxels deeper...
متن کاملResponse-mode decomposition of spatio-temporal haemodynamics.
The blood oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) response to a neural stimulus is analysed using the transfer function derived from a physiologically based poroelastic model of cortical tissue. The transfer function is decomposed into components that correspond to distinct poles, each related to a response mode with a natural frequency and dispersion relation; together these yield the total BOLD respons...
